Founded:1997

Mission:

The Stone Soup Leadership Institute develops educational tools, trainings, initiatives to prepare young and emerging leaders to build a more sustainable world.  The Institute brings the Stone Soup fable to life, inspiring people to give their gifts so together we can feed the hunger in our souls and the hunger in the world.  Our book and educational curriculum, Stone Soup for the World: Life-Changing Stories of Everyday Heroes which were written on the Vineyard features the story of two Vineyard farmers Andrew Woodruff and Rick Anderson who rallied the community to rebuild the island’s beloved old Ag Hall in 1995.

"Stone Soup for the World: Life-Changing Stories of Everyday Heroes is a blueprint for building a better world. Its heroes are legendary people and ordinary folks who, by conviction, imagination, innovation, persistence, frequently hard work, and not infrequently moral or physical courage, have lifted their neighbors and their communities. They challenge each of us to respond in kind." -- Walter Cronkite

Major Programs:

1.  Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative

MVYLI’s year-round program builds on the youth’s goals from the Youth Summit and provides them leadership development opportunities.  They develop individualized action plans to work towards their personal, professional, island and planetary goals.  We conduct coaching and monthly workshops on college planning, career development, service learning projects for their island and the world. We expose their young minds to inspiring leaders, open doors and expand their horizons. We develop internships and partnerships with schools, civic and business associations including Island Grown Schools, The Farm Institute, Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of MV and Martha’s Vineyard Community Television.

 2. Youth Leadership Summit for Sustainable Development: June 20-27, 2011

The MVYLI Youth Leadership Summit is a weeklong intensive leadership training where youth delegates (ages 15-22) envisioned their personal, professional, island and planetary goals; and began creating action plans for sustainable projects.

3. Walter Cronkite Awards Ceremony: July 17, 2011

Walter Cronkite was the honorary chairperson of the Stone Soup Leadership Institute for nearly a decade.  Mr. Cronkite’s wisdom and vision of preparing our youth as future leaders in their communities gave rise to this Annual Awards Ceremony.
