Mission:
Phyllis Veccchia Creative Drama develops and implements participatory theater programs and dramatizations for individuals, groups, schools and communiy organizations to build self-esteem, increase motivation, challenge personal limitations, develop a sense of pride and belonging to the community and encourage an appreciation of the differences in people and cultures.
Phyllis Vecchia Creative Drama is the only program on the Vineyard that is serving the needs of the very young in the theatre realm. We do this by our preschool work and intergenerational work at Windemere.We are also the only theatre program at Anchors and Windemere working with seniors who have Alzheimer's.
Our brand new program is teaching Women In History through theatre for sixth-eighth graders. We had a wonderful winter working at the Tisbury School and Charter School. The children learned about the lives of Phillis Wheatley, first African American poet, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marina Silva, rain forest advocate from Brazil and the Suffragists: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Amelia Bloomer and Susan B Anthony.
Major Programs:
- Women's History through theatre 6th-8th grades, Tisbury school, Charter School.
- Kindergarten Work, Chilmark school and the Charter School
- Preschool work, Garden Gate Child Care Development Center and Grace Church Preschool.
- Intergenerational creative drama workshops offered at Windemere Nursing Home with Martha's Vineyard Community Services preschool.
- Creative Drama workshops at Anchors, Social Day Program for Seniors inEdgartown.
