Mission
- To protect and preserve water quality in Sengekontacket Pond and Trapps Pond
- To preserve habitat for aquatic plants and animals, shellfish, and birds
- To promote environmentally sound management and use of the pond and barrier beach
- To initiate, support and fund research and activities that will benefit the Sengekontacket Pond systems and the Joseph Sylvia State Beach
- To provide an outreach program to promote public awareness of and education about the Sengekontacket watershed
- To collaborate with watershed residents, recreational and commercial pond and beach users and all relevant levels of government in developing and implementing conservation strategies for the protections of Sengekontacket, Trapps Pond and the State
Major Programs:
- Joseph Sylvia State Beach beach grass planting and clean-up
- Environmental education programs, such as providing watershed residents with stewardship guidelines
- Barrier Beach Task Force, jointly sponsored with Dukes County government and state officials, to maintain and preserve the natural resources of the pond and beach
- Participation in the Massachusetts Estuaries Project
- In collaboration with MVC, eel grass re-planting
- Carry In/Carry Out program encourages school children and adults to take responsibility to remove their own trash and litter as they enjoy the pond and its barrier beach
