Mission:
Sail Martha's Vineyard is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and perpetuating our Island's maritime heritage and culture. Toward that end, we:
- Encourage Island residents to be comfortable in and around the water through such programs as our free boat handling and sailing instruction for children, adult sailing instruction and support for the high school sailing club for competitive sailors.
- Develop educational programs in our public schools that familiarize Island children with the maritime traditions of Martha's Vineyard.
- Attract interesting and historic vessels to the Island and support such local vessels.
- Sponsor programs that in other ways explore the maritime heritage of the Island, to include our scholarship program.
- Serve as a focal point for other maritime-related organizations and initiatives on the Island.
Major Programs:
Sail MV offers a rich curriculum of instructional sailing. Students 8-16 are taught seamanship and sailing and skills to last a lifetime in a fun and safe environment. Sail MV also operates the summer sailing program at the Chilmark Community Center and the summer races on Menemsha Pond.
Maritime Studieas: Sail MV has developed and is underwriting a vocational track course in Maritime Studies at MVRHS. The program's curriculum is designed to provide core seamanship skills as a prerequisite to entering the experiential courses made available by Sail MV's partners; the Steamship Authority, Gannon& Benjamin and the Shipyard. The program provides a clear path toward gainful employment upon graduation from High School.
Sail MV continues to support the Pilot Gig Rowing Club, the High School Varsity sailing team and offer courses in Captain's Licensing, Adult sailing and maritime educational courses.
