Juneteenth is a Day at Inkwell Beach...handing out popsicles, beverages or chips, maybe helping with an activity . Halloween and Christmas are out doors and usually assisting children, getting people to stay on the sidewalks, orchestrating crowds that are having fun. Specifically, you'll give weekly classes on "Preventing Falls." The course you'll be trained to give is called "Matter of Balance," the curriculum for which is licensed by Healthy Aging MV on behalf of the Island's 4 Councils on Aging (COAs). You'd work with HAMV and the COAs to identify an 8-week period that works with your schedule, then deliver a 2-hr class each week for 8 weeks. Big Brothers Big Sisters on MV is in need of Big Brothers to serve as mentors for the several boys on the waitlist. Bigs commit to a minimum of one year in the program and meet with their Little (mentee) two-three times a month for a few hours each time. The goal of the program is to provide an additional, positive adult, to help support a child that could benefit from positive 1:1 adult attention. We are looking for volunteers interested in helping out at our larger community events like the Agricultural Fair and Harvest Festival. Volunteers will usually deliver one day weekly, and will deliver to a specific area on the Island. The total commitment is about two hours, between 10 and noon, and mileage reimbursement is available. Meals are picked up at Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands M.V. office, located in the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. A CORI check is required. Year-round, seasonal, and substitute drivers are welcome.
